Heaphy Draft Plan Released

by Steve 2. July 2009 04:37

The Heaphy Track is reckoned by many to be the best long distance singletrack ride in New Zealand. And the Department of Conservation has just (as in today) released its Draft Partial Review of the Kahurangi National Park Management Plan. The Plan proposes to trial seasonal access for mountain bikes on the Heaphy from 1 May to 1 October each year. And general access for mountain bikes on the Kill Devil and Flora Saddle-Barron Flat tracks.

This is great news and the 'rules of engagement' detailed in the plan are consistent with what Mountain Bike NZ has lobbied for over the past 15 years.

There is wide spread support for this change. In 2005 the NZ Conservation Authority changed the General Policy for National Parks to allow for mountain bike access on selected tracks in National Parks. This decision was backed by an overwhelming majority of submissions. Of the 1305 received, 1106 supported the change while just 22 opposed. Support came from More...

Team Quick Step reacts on ZDF Television program

by Steve 2. July 2009 04:33
Patrik Sinkewitz, formerly of the T-Mobile and Quick Step teams reportedly told the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) during hearings in 2007 that Quick Step engaged in “systematic doping”. The German rider said that he received cortisone injections before each race as well as doses of EPO and growth hormones. He added that his hematocrit values were measured regularly to adjust the doses he received.

He revealed this on Germany’s Frontal 21 television program, which is broadcast by the ZDF network.

Quick Step was quick to respond to the allegations, calling it “false and defamatory content”, and pledged to launch appropriate legal actions with appropriate courts to protect its image and rights.

Sinkewitz’s allegations come More...

Caisse d'Epargne Team for Tour

by Steve 30. June 2009 08:30
Caisse d'Epargne confirmed today all nine of its men who will start in the Tour de France. It includes 2007 Tour de France winner Oscar Pereiro.

The named riders are Spaniards David Arroyo, Iván Gutiérrez, Luis Pasamontes, Oscar Pereiro, José Joaquín Rojas, Luis León Sánchez, Portugal's Rui Costa, France's Arnaud Coyot and Colombia's Rigoberto Uran.

Caisse's highest-ranking rider in the 2008 Tour de France was Spain's Alejandro Valverde. A two-year suspension in Italy for his involvement in the 2006 doping investigation, Operación Puerto, prohibits him from racing. The race passes through Italy on stage 16.

Caisse confirmed he would be left off the team last week.

The team has many options for the overall classification. Arroyo rode well last year and finished 30th overall. Sánchez is going well so far this year with overall wins in the Paris-Nice and Tour Méditerranéen stage races.

Chad Gerlach wears Limar helmet during spectacular comeback

by Steve 30. June 2009 08:06

American cyclist Chad Gerlach continued his stunning return to form by
winning two stages at Nevada’s Tour de Nez this month and consequently claiming his first
overall victory in the event. He received a $3,000 prize for his efforts.

“Cycling’s a constant struggle,” Gerlach told the Reno Gazette-Journal. “I’ll take a win
wherever I can get it.”

Prior to this triumph, Gerlach nearly lapped the field with an astonishing and lengthy
breakaway performance at last month’s U.S. Air Force Clarendon Cup Criterium in Virginia.
Sporting a lightweight Limar helmet like all of his Amore & Vita-McDonald’s teammates, the
35-year-old Gerlach demonstrated power and strength that was every bit as dramatic as his
return to professional cycling. He wound up finishing sixth in the event.

Gerlach, who remained in the lead for 70 of that race’s 100 laps, told Velo News, “I just
attacked to kind of get the race going. I’m happy I had a great race.”

GLORIOUS FINISH FOR LONDON-PARIS 09 CYCLE TOUR

by Steve 30. June 2009 07:59
Glorious sunshine and a Parisian heatwave greeted the 300 London-Paris 09 Cycle Tour riders at the finish under the Eiffel Tower on Saturday.

The sunshine was a reward for the riders who battled their way through flash floods, thunder and lightning over the 320km, three day ride, staged by global sports event company HotChillee.

Riders included Olympians James Cracknell and Elise Laverick, former Tour de France winner Stephen Roche, ex-England footballer Geoff Thomas and British Cycling’s Team Sky manager Scott Sunderland.

The ride is the premier professional event for amateur cyclists.  With rolling road closures and full logistical support, the London-Paris Cycle Tour is the closest the non-Pro rider can get to the Tour de France experience.

Ex-pro Sunderland, who will help lead British Cycling’s assault on the Tour de France in 2010, said: “‘It was great to take part with riders of all abilities and to see the Group 3 and 4 riders really looking to accomplish something.  There is a real buzz around the event with people making friends and respecting each other.  L2P offers a unique experience that very few events can offer.”

Another former pro-rider, ex-British champion More...

SIDI SPORT AND ERGO 2 CARBONS ITALIAN CHAMPIONS WITH FILIPPO POZZATO

by Steve 30. June 2009 07:55
Sunday June 28th, in the temple to speed that is the Imola (Bologna) racetrack, Filippo Pozzato (Team Katusha) won the Italian Championship road race. Pippo was among the favourites at the very start of the race, and he didn’t disappoint. This is another victory to add to the already rich palmares of the Sidi Sport colour bearer, who has 36 career victories under his belt, the most notable which include:  the 2003 Tirreno-Adriatico, two classics like the 2005 Hamburg and the 2006 Sanremo races, and 2 stages in the Tour de France. And let’s not forget that this year he has been a major player in the entire northern campaign, his favourite terrain, winning on the cobblestone walls in the GP Harelbeke, in a stage at De Panne, and taking an important second place in the Paris-Roubaix.

On the highest step on the podium our hero was wearing his Sidi Ergo 2 Carbon shoes, in the special, custom-made all white style favoured by Pozzato. After this win the white will be flanked by green and red to make up the Italian flag. Pozzato is without a doubt one of the most outstanding athletes in the Sidi Sport stable of champions. He’s a really first class player who moved up to the pros from the junior league in 2000, and who has always raced and won with the shoes from the company in Maser (Treviso). This Italian victory was particularly sweet. As things turned out, Pozzato, who is a great cars and specially Ferrari fan, won the Italian championships by buzzing like an F1 over the finish line set up on the Enzo and Dino Ferrari speedway at Imola.

Pozzato will now also have the great pleasure and pride of wearing the Italian Champion’s jersey in the Grande Boucle, the most important race in the world that starts July 4th from his hometown roads in Monaco, where Pippo lives.
